Have you ever noticed that your healed piercings sometimes smell, well, awful? Some people call it ear funk, ear cheese, piercing funk, ear stink, or just plain yuk! Your body secretes a substance called sebum as part of its normal everyday work.
Sebum is secreted by the sebaceous glands in the skin. Such a turn off. And they were wood too. Bella York April 04, I have had stretched lobes for about 12 years. Started when i was 16, stretched very fast cause i was a glutton for pain, and eventually settled on a 00g. I love them.
It has been a journey, however. My skin is verrrrrry sensitive. When i was about 17, i got particularly loaded one night, and both my plugs fell out. In the morning, i went searching for them and found them in a pile of muddy leaves. Not one of my best moments, but something possesed me to put them straight back into my ears. Needless to say, they got extremely infected.
The gland behind both of my ears swelled and leaked, the result was extremely wet, crusty, smelly lobes. I had to take out my plugs and let my ear holes shrink back to regular size. That is my favorite part of a 00g, if ever you need to take them out, your ears WILL go back to normal. You can wear regular earrings after a couple months.
It took a few more tries at stretching and infecting, but i finally decided to try bone and wood plugs, instead of acrylic, and natural material plugs are the only reason i was able to successfully stretch my ears again after that stupid, stupid decision i made.
My ears still get that cheesy stank only stretched lobes and belly buttons can produce. But as with anything stinky, good washing and drying routines are a great remedy. Clean regularly, as you would any body part. Keep calm, and guage on! The benefits of taking them out at night are the help the circulation in the lobe, keeping it healthy.
They give your ear a much needed chance to breathe, as well as keeping it healthier will also reduce smell. Another option would be to take you plug out for an hour or so to let it breathe, perhaps after the cleaning process. This way you can still let your ear breath for a while without risking a slight shrink.
So there we go, hopefully that covers all the steps you need to identify and reduce ear odour. For more information see our other blog posts and piercing aftercare section. Remember not to let anyone else use your soap! Soak your piercing twice daily for three to five minutes in a warm sea salt solution.
Avoid gauge odor by washing the area two to three times daily with unscented, antibacterial soap and water. Wash both sides of the ear with clean hands; rinse thoroughly. Periodically remove the gauge to allow it to dry thoroughly and get some air. Alternatively, you can simply purchase stretching tools and jewelry and do it yourself at home.
Wash your ear gauges with antibacterial soap no more than one to two times per day. Wash your hands thoroughly. Just to moist the pierced area, you can even use some antibacterial ointment recommended by your piercing artist and do a little massage around the the rim of the gauge. Crusting after body piercing is perfectly normal—this is just the result of your body trying to heal itself.
Dead blood cells and plasma make their way to the surface and then dry when exposed to air.
