What is the difference between monochrome and color




















You can produce color and black and white versions of the same photo, plus you can create an unlimited number of black and white and monochrome variations. The disadvantage here is that it requires the extra step to create the black and white image and you have to learn photo editing.

To speed up the black and white conversion, I heavily rely on Lightroom presets. I have a dedicated collection for landscape photographs and presets designed for environmental portraits.

As I mentioned earlier, there are two primary methods of creating black and white photographs. But, I have the option to apply black and white film simulations to my shots anyway. What this does is switches my EVF to monochrome mode, so I can preview the scene in black and white to better assess the scene potential for black and white photography. When I press the shutter, the camera captures the color RAW image but, at the same time, it creates a black and white preview and embeds it into the RAW file.

There are some photographers who ONLY create black and white images in-camera and see it as the purest form of photography. I can certainly appreciate this point of view.

But, if you are at the start of your photography journey and just working through the various terms, meanings, whys, and wherefores, my advice is not to panic. Go out and photograph as much and as often as you can. Later, you can decide if it should be a color or a black and white image. If you force your camera to capture black and white, it will often do so in JPEG format. If you capture in RAW format , you will capture a color photo and get more image data.

This is useful for post-processing. If you still want to capture your images in black and white you can set this on a Nikon DSLR by using the menu:. However, it is better to learn how to identify what makes a good black and white image but still capture it in color, to be converted later. As mentioned above, these two terms are one and the same thing. Grayscale, however, does not store color information at all. If you want to discard color information in Photoshop, you can opt to convert it to grayscale mode.

Be aware that this is a destructive way of converting a photo to black and white. This means that once you convert it, you lose the color information in the image forever. Converting photos from color to black and white in Photoshop is a whole topic in itself. There are a lot of different ways to do it. You can try taking some black and white portraits or landscape photography.
